• Turning/tilling always-wet & rocky unmanaged lot

Posted by MichaelPE on August 27, 2021 at 1:38 pm

We purchased a home that has a large area. I’ve tried to brush hog it. It is a rough ride. It is about 3 acre and I have a NH Boomer 24. The soil is always wet due to a high ground water table. There are also plenty of rock. I would like to try to till it and level it a bit. I’ve been watching lots of video about tilling but most of the videos comment the ground need to be dry and mine never is. Any recommendations or suggestions?

    That is a good challenge.

I don’t think a tiller is the best idea given how wet it sounds.

Could you smooth it out with a heavy roller?

If not, perhaps rent a power rake like the ones we’ve shown on our channel?

Thank you for the suggestion. I would be able to roll a good portion of it. Others, I’d be afraid to get the roller or the tractor stuck in the muck. I’d just have to be careful with that.

I will now need to go look at power rakes. I have a regular landscape rake but unfortunately I don’t let have a way to attach it to the three point.

This may seem drastic but have you thought about a swale or ditch around the area to help with drainage. Find the lowest point on the property and form a swale or ditch to it. Water will always move to the lowest point if given a path.

I agree with Tim using a power rake would be the best option. We had to do reclamation work along a reservoir that had standing water. We had to use a bulldozer to fill ruts and fix the worst of it, but afterwards used our tracked skidsteer and power rake to level it off. The tracked machine was the only way to get in there since it was so wet. When we were done we hydroseeded it.

    Good luck
